Are There Gallbladder Surgery Complications?

As people continue to eat a diet of fats and processed foods, laparoscopic cholecystectomies are going to continue to be required for an increasing number of people. This type of surgery, which is the removal of the gallbladder, is the most commonly performed surgery today. Gallbladder removal even surpasses that of an appendectomy. While it is common, there are some gallbladder surgery complications that can arise. It is important to know all the risks and gall bladder surgery complications.

Laparoscopic Surgery

A laparoscopic surgery is one that must be done carefully and slowly. Especially when working in the area of the abdomen and gallbladder. There are several small ducts and organs that are very close together that are all working together. As this type of surgery is performed with a small video camera, and the inflating of the abdomen with air, there can be some gallbladder surgery complications.

Some Common Gall Bladder Surgery Complications

With any surgery that you may undergo, there is an inherent risk of complications. These can be caused by several different variables such as the patient's anatomy, current health condition, surgeon error, tool malfunction, or just sheer neglect. With a gallbladder surgery, some of these variables are amplified because of the way the surgery is done. Working with a video camera, while it does make the surgery much less invasive and recovery faster, carries with it some potential complications.

Cutting Of Hepatic Duct

Bile is secreted into the intestines through different ducts. One of these is called the hepatic duct. Since each person is anatomically different with slight variances, it is important for the surgeon to be very sure of the duct that he is cutting. Sometimes this hepatic duct is cut resulting in bile seeping into the abdominal cavity poisoning the patient.

Because of the close proximity of the various ducts, and organs, this is a very common injury. However, it is also easily repaired if they find it.

Cholangitis

Another common complication with gallbladder surgery is called cholangitis. Cholangitis is attributed to injury during surgery, but causes problems after gall bladder surgery. This problem is an infection, or an inflammation of the bile ducts that causes bacteria and other types of waste products to flow upwards in the intestines. Cholangitis can be life threatening if not caught and treated in time.

Symptoms of Problems After Gall Bladder Surgery

Sometimes the injury to the bile duct is not seen during the surgery. However, you will know soon enough that there were gallbladder surgery complications.

The patient will begin to feel sick after surgery. This is not a tell tale sign, but is the beginning of more problems. After a few days the patient will begin to look jaundiced as the liver begins to stop functioning. Patients may also experience pain and a difficulty in breathing.

If you have these types of complications after gall bladder surgery then contact your doctor as you may have serious bile leakage.
