Are There Any Gall Bladder Surgery Side Effects?

One of the most common surgeries performed in the US today is a removal of the gall bladder. This surgery is relatively easy to perform and there are very few gall bladder surgery side effects. A gall bladder surgery, also known as a cholecystectomy, can be performed in one of two ways. Each of these bring with it a greater or lesser amount of side effects.
Different Side Effects For Different People

Because there are many factors that go into determining which surgery a patient will have, there are also different types of side effects that may afflict the patient. This does not mean to say that there will be side effects present, but that there are different ones for different people.

Also, gall bladder surgery side effects are determined by the type of surgery that is performed. The side effects from a laparoscopic gall bladder removal will be different from one that requires a full incision.

Gall Bladder Surgery Side Effects

Most people will have one or a few side effects from the surgery. They can vary from being severe to moderate depending on the type of surgery that was performed. However, they will only last for a week or 10 days at the most and begin to subside.

Pain

Of course, the most common type of side effect associated with gall bladder surgery is the pain from the incision. These incisions can be inflamed from the swelling and be irritated during the healing process. Common pain relievers will help with this.

Air Injection

When the surgeon performs the surgery, they will inject air, or carbon dioxide, into the belly so they can better see into the area. This air will dissipate over time and will be very uncomfortable. There is some pain associated with this and you must be very careful when you move.

Constipation

Directly after the surgery you will have a time when you will be constipated. This is a natural happening caused by the disruption in the digestive process. If it lasts for longer than a few days, then consult your doctor.

Diarrhea

Another common gall bladder surgery side effect is a short period of diarrhea. Once the constipation is over, the diarrhea can last a few days to up to a week duration. If it is too severe, and you are left dehydrated, then you should consult your doctor. However, your stool will be a little loose after the surgery because of the change in diet.

Gall Bladder Surgery Side Effects

Most patients who have gall bladder surgery will have some sort of side effect associated with the surgery. However, they are short-lived. You should take time to recover from the surgery, while most of the side effects dissipate. After a few weeks you will be back to a normal schedule.
